The First Nashville Jesus Band

Welcome To Nashville Lamb&Lion 1973
As I listened to the lead-off song of this LP after not having heard it for 20 years, I had to think "Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass," with steel guitars instead of horns. This was an all-instrumental release. They did a number of projects with Pat Boone in the early 70's. As the name would imply, this album is heavily influenced by country music stylings, but at times (e.g. Jesus Is Coming Soon), you sense a more jazzy undercurrent. One song (I Am a Pilgrim), they even rock a little. And is that a sitar I hear on "Nearer My God To Thee?" Some of the selections might seem a bit odd by today's standards, but I guess in that day "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and "Daddy Sang Bass" were considered Jesus music. At times a bit painful and at others quite good, this LP is definitely worth blowing the dust off for an occasional listen. CP
