DeGarmo & Key Band

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Eddie DeGarmo had one dream while growing up -- to become a rock 'n' roll star. Eddie started his musical career by playing in various neighborhood bands, but he never stayed long with any particular one because his dream was to have a group of his own. Finally, after leaving his older brother's band, he formed his own group with his childhood friend, a guitarist named Dana Key. Eddie's older brother had become a Christian and had started sharing his new faith with Eddie. At first Eddie refused to even listen, because he thought that if he became a Christian he would have to give up the most important thing in his life--his music.

But it wasn't long before he realized that his life was a wreck and that he was helpless without God, so he went to church with his brother. When the service was over and the preacher had given the call to come forward, Eddie walked to the front of the church and accepted Christ into his life. Things began to change dramatically, and for the first time Eddie began to really feel love for Dana. He began to feel sorry for him because he could see that Dana's life was a carbon copy of his own, and without Jesus he was going to be lost forever. So he shared what had happened to him, and Dana too accepted Jesus into his life.

Regardless of what you think of their 80's and 90's arena ccm, this band's first two albums stand as rock masterpieces, especially Straight On. Ed DeGarmo experiments with an array of keyboards citing Keith Emerson as a source of inspiration while Dana Key balances out the sound with solid electric leads or subdued acoustic passages. It's an FM 70's rock sound that combines the progressive keyboards of ELF and Kansas with the more bluesy likes of The Allman Brothers and Atlanta Rhythm Section. Even the ballads steer clear of the sappy single routine. KS
