Tommy was born in Long Beach, California and grew up in nearby Lakewood. At an early age he learned to play the trumpet and his ensuing years were spent playing in various school bands and orchestras. It wasn't until the end of high school that Tommy became involved in rock bands.

During that time he taught himself to play the guitar. After graduation, he entered college, majoring in music. Tommy then quit college and entered the Army where he re-met Fred Field. They had played together in a group prior to the Army. Discharged in the fall of 1969. Tommy moved to Orange County, California. where he was introduced to Jay and Chuck.

Shortly thereafter, Tommy, Jay. Chuck, and Fred moved to Laguna Beach. Although there was optimism about the future, Tommy, like everyone else, anxiously awaited a sign that changes were coming.
